Must we pray about everything? You may ask, “Does God have a will for each thing I do every day? Does He have a will for what shoes I should wear? Which route I should travel when going to work? Or what I should eat for lunch?” Does God bother about such little things?

God knows every little thing we do. However, He has given us a good mind with which to make decisions. It is not necessary to pray about things that neither hinder nor help the plan of God. These are our decisions to make. We should ask, “Does this affect God’s plan? Does it strengthen my walk with God?” That is why God has given us a brain. He wants us to use it!

Why is it unnecessary to pray about some things?

Because God has given us a good mind to make decisions. We do not need to pray about things that neither help nor hinder God’s plan.

Some “little” things are not little because they affect the plan of God. If I say, “I don’t feel like praying today,” that is no “little” thing. By not praying, I weaken my walk with God and fail to grow spiritually. But if I say, “I don’t feel like eating fish today,” that is a little thing, and it is not necessary to pray about it. Eating or not eating fish does not affect God’s plan.

However, God saves our lives through a feeling inside us that warns us not to go to some place or do something. This “feeling” is really the voice of the Spirit within us. We need to pay attention to these inner warnings.

We need to know how to listen to the Spirit! Even though God has angels who guard each of us, we still need to listen. Often, we find that we would have been injured if we had not listened to the Spirit. God’s angels protect those who listen.

So, in things that do not affect the kingdom of God, we can make our own decisions. But we should always be listening for the voice of the Spirit lest we make a wrong decision.

Praying for His Plan:

God has a plan and every believer should prayerfully seek to follow it. Before we pray for anything else, we should think of God’s plan and ask ourselves:

• Am I doing what God wants me to do today?

• Is my work part of His plan?

So, when a job is offered to you, it would be right to pray about it before accepting it. Your decision should be based on whether the job helps you do God’s will—not on how much money you will be paid. Some people accept jobs where there is no church just because the pay is better. But if you take the job and stop praying in the house of God, then you are doing wrong. It is better to take less pay than to be out of God’s will.

Jesus gave the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19–20). He was speaking about His will for those who had not heard the gospel.

4 things Jesus said to do in Matthew 28:19–20:

1. Go

2. Make disciples (to preach the gospel)

3. Baptize

4. Teach

This is the command of Jesus and the will of God. All other prayers are “little” compared to prayers for the plan of God. To do the plan of God, we need:

• People who can pray.

• People who can preach.

• People who can work and give.

• People who can teach.

• People who can witness to their neighbors.

• People who can witness to those in other lands.

• People who can build and work with their hands.

• People who can comfort those who are in trouble.

There are many kinds of people needed in doing the plan of God. Each of us should pray to know what God wants us to do. We should also pray that others will give themselves to work in God’s plan.

Praying With the Spirit

How can we know how to pray? How can we pray for people to be saved and for believers to be like Jesus when our own families have such great needs? We have children to feed, houses to build, bills to pay, clothes to buy, knowledge to obtain, and plans of our own.

The answer is, “Yes, it is, but you will need help!”

When Jesus went to heaven, He said He would send the Holy Spirit. One of the Holy Spirit’s names is Paraclete, which means “One called alongside to help.”

We need someone to help us do the right thing, put first things first, and teach us how to pray. That is exactly what the Holy Spirit has been sent by Jesus to do.

We need the Holy Spirit because He helps us pray for the right things. Romans 8:26–27 says that the Spirit helps us in our weakness because we do not know how we ought to pray. The Spirit pleads with God for His people in accordance with His will.

Why do we need the Holy Spirit’s help in prayer?

Because He prays (intercedes) for us according to God’s will. The Spirit will not pray for selfish things. He prays for:

1. All men to believe.

2. All believers to become like Jesus.

We need to yield ourselves to the Holy Spirit and let Him pray for us and through us. Sometimes, when we feel a burden for lost people, the Spirit prays through us in an unknown tongue. He always prays according to the will of God.

If we pray only for selfish desires, we should not expect the Spirit to pray for us unless our request concerns God’s plan. But when we pray for things that help God’s work, the Holy Spirit helps us because His work is to pray according to the plan.
